BACKGROUND INFO:

My work with families has inspired me to begin a series of CDs for all parents and caregivers who have trouble believing that they can sing - and for the little ones who will sing these songs in the future.  The truth is that everyone can sing, and that singing is a joyful act that we can share as a community, family, classroom, school, or wherever we are. Singing brings amazing health to all who dare to raise their voices.  In support of singing and playing together, I offer a wide variety of winter songs here, from little tales of gnomes and their magical doings, to sing-along songs in recordings accompanied by children’s voices, to artful a cappella and instrument-accompanied versions of traditional Swedish wintertime songs.

WINTER: local musicians offer a unique family gift
- an interview with Cari Burdett - by Chantell Foss
Printed in Valley Voice, Dec 2010

Cari Burdett, local diva and music teacher, wants you to celebrate the winter season with song.  She and husband, musician and instrument-maker Massimo Pintus, are releasing a family c.d. to help you do just that.  Professional performers and teachers, they are equally musical community activists.  For them, even selling a c.d. is not all about getting you to listen to a c.d.  It’s about helping you and the children in your life to sing, and to love it.

What’s the story behind these songs and stories?

After my elder children were born, my focus on vocal performance widened to include teaching.  I noticed that a lot of “children’s music” is not so musically appealing.  In my parent-tot classes, I used songs that I learned living in Sweden for 4 years.  My teacher shared these simple, jewel-like masterpieces with me.  I really wanted the world to hear them.  It’s not easy to create living, beautiful pentatonic songs, which are so healthy for children.  These sound timeless, and we emphasized that in our recordings.  Massimo provided instrumental accompaniment, on guitars,  percussion, and one of his own forged iron glockenspiels.  So we call this a family c.d., because the songs are good for children, but they also have appeal and depth for adults.

Why produce a c.d. now?

Parents want to take songs with them to sing with their children, so we began producing ad hoc recordings to help them.  So  many people feel they don’t have permission to sing.  I want to encourage people to find their own voices and freedom to play.  I want WINTER to be a resource tool to allow people to dive in.  And this is only the first of eight!  We plan to record more seasonal albums and records for singing from pregnancy through early childhood.
